Scoliosis is the lateral deviation of the spine. This condition affects people of all ages but is seen in children more than any other age group. Studies show that 4% of children ages 10-14 are afflicted with treatable Scoliosis. Within that small group of affected children it has been estimated that 60%-80% are girls. Moreover, although most cases of scoliosis stop progressing at the end of adolescence, spinal curvature may continue and cause individuals pain throughout their entire lives.
Types Of Scoliosis
There are several different types of Scoliosis. All negatively impact afflicted individuals causing pain and mobility issues.
Infant Scoliosis: This type of Scoliosis affects newborns on through children up to the age of 3. This type is also more prevalent in males. Statistics show that Scoliosis resolves itself in infants 74%-97% of the time though those who don’t “outgrow” the disorder may experience problems in reaching important developmental milestones.
Juvenile: Juvenile Scoliosis affects those children between the ages of 3 and early adolescence. Children with this type of Scoliosis usually experience great severity of both curvature and the pain associated with it. In order to halt progression of Juvenile Scoliosis quarterly monitoring by a Chiropractor is required. This monitoring is necessary because progression of the disorder into adolescence grows exponentially with every passing year. Children who go un-monitored are at risk of serious problems throughout adulthood. Once spinal maturity reaches it’s end point Scoliosis should have been systemically treated and stopped/corrected. Children who begin receiving Chiropractic treatments at this early stage of life enjoy pain free adult lives.
Adolescent: Adolescent Scoliosis affects those persons who’ve reached puberty but have yet to become young adults. Although Scoliosis is detectable in infants, teenagers are diagnosed with it more often than persons of any other age group. As is the case with their juvenile counterparts, teens with Scoliosis should be monitored closely until they reach adulthood.
Chiropractic Scoliosis Treatments
Chiropractors understand that untreated Scoliosis can lead to not only great pain throughout the entire body but in disability and even death. Therefore they never seek to simply mask pain with medicine but rather to treat the cause of this pain and correct the spine’s curvature. Children with Scoliosis that see a Chiropractor will experience the following:
- Regular visits so as to monitor the degree of spinal curvature.
- Spinal adjustments that minimize and even eliminate stresses placed on the back. These adjustments also optimize bio-mechanics so that the nervous system functions properly.
- Spinal therapy which includes exercises designed to strengthen convex spinal muscles as well as make them flexible on the concave side of the back.
