Fibromyalgia and the Neck

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is condition where the body is plagued with not only a heightened pain response but becomes extra sensitive to pressure as well. The largest group of persons affected by this disease are those over 40 with the majority of these persons being female. It is not currently know exactly what causes Fibromyalgia but it is often linked to persons suffering from depression, those with anxiety disorders, and those living with post traumatic stress disorder. Those who undergo psychological trauma and/or have dealt with a severe infection are at greater risk for Fibromyalgia than are other peoples. A sizable number of people visit a health care professional because of excessive fatigue, persistent digestive problems, and even extremities that go numb and/or tingle. It is during these and subsequent visits that they are diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

In Fibromyalgia, the central nervous system goes awry after enduring high levels of stress and trauma. The result of this is a runaway effect that makes persons much more sensitive to pain than those whom don’t have the disorder. Fibromyalgia currently affects roughly 8% of the globe’s population though there are some very effective treatments that allow patients to live pain free and happy lives.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

The symptoms of Fibromyalgia vary from person to person though the most common affect the majority of sufferers. These include:

  • Widespread pain that last more than 3 months
  • Problems with memory
  • Odd or problematic bowel and bladder functions.
  • Diminished attention span
  • Persistent pain in the shoulders, neck, lower back, and hips.
  • Joint dysfunction
  • Mood swings or persistent foul mood.

Fibromyalgia And The Neck

In those suffering from Fibromyalgia, the connection between the brain and the body is disrupted. This disruption is what causes the persistent pain in patients as the nervous system becomes incapable of regulating pain signals which leaves them “unfiltered” as they enter the brain. As a result the nerves in the body become overloaded and overworked which leads to a noticeable fatigue in those with Fibromyalgia.

Working With A Chiropractor

While many with Fibromyalgia might seek traditional medical treatments for what ails them, those whom live with the disorder often find themselves disillusioned with the lack of real treatment given as well as the rush to medicate and mask the problem.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic however seek not to mask symptoms but rather treat the actual cause of the pain. We seek to restore the neurological balance between the head and neck. Once we have restored this balance the body can heal itself more effectively, reduce inflammation, and eventually operate pain free. Those with Fibromyalgia whom seek out a Chiropractor will also find that their quality of sleep/rest vastly improves and that their pain steadily decreases over time.
