Migraines are a debilitating neurological disorder that causes extreme discomfort to the one suffering. The Journal of the American Headache Society recently reported that one side effect from frequent migraines is progressive brain damage.
The study examined the brains of 28 patients who had been suffering from migraines using a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging machine, called an MRI. The results revealed that those suffering from 3 or more migraines monthly had more abnormalities than those who experienced less than 3 migraines during a month’s time. Similar results were seen when looking at the brains of those who had migraines for longer than 15 years versus those who began dealing with migraines more recently.
While that seems like pretty bad news for migraine sufferers, there is some hope in view. Using an upright MRI, research has shown that if a misalignment exists in the upper neck vertebrae, a change in cerebrospinal fluid flow can occur. This fluid is vital to brain function as it acts as a lubricant to the brain and spinal cord. A misalignment in the upper cervical spine can lead to a build-up of this fluid, thus creating intracranial pressure. The good news is that this problem can be corrected by a proper realignment of the uppermost bones of the neck.

Upper cervical chiropractic care is safe and effective. It is a gentle technique that encourages the bones to move back into their proper position. Once this occurs, cerebrospinal fluid flow can begin to be regulated once again. The healing properties of the body take over and help things to get back to normal. The results for many patients in case studies have been a decrease in migraine attacks or even an end to migraines.
Keep in mind, if a migraine is due to a misalignment of the neck, no amount of medication will ever make it go away completely since these drugs just cover symptoms. An upper cervical professional, however, may be able to provide long-lasting relief.
