When a baby grows, mom’s organs must shift to make room. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, and it originates in the lower back area. It then branches off into each leg. So as the baby gets bigger, more and more pressure is exerted on the sciatic nerve, leading to pain in the buttocks, hips, leg, or foot. Usually, pain is only felt on one side of the body.

Here are some things one can do at home to help relieve some of the pain of sciatica.

  • Lie on the opposite side of the pain when resting
  • Do not stand for extended periods of time
  • Ice the area of pain to reduce swelling
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects
  • Elevate the leg on the painful side as much as possible
