Soon the time will be here to love and hold one’s baby, but until then it is important to do all that is possible to limit pain while pregnant. Why is sciatica so common during pregnancy?

When a baby grows, mom’s organs must shift to make room. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, and it originates in the lower back area. It then branches off into each leg. The problem is that these nerve branches run right below the uterus. So as the baby gets bigger, more and more pressure is exerted on the sciatic nerve, leading to pain in the buttocks, hips, leg, or foot. Usually, pain is only felt on one side of the body.

Here are some things one can do at home to help relieve some of the pain of sciatica.

  • Lie on the opposite side of the pain when resting
  • Do not stand for extended periods of time
  • Ice the area of pain to reduce swelling
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects
  • Elevate the leg on the painful side as much as possible

One can also opt to visit and consult with a Walnut Creek Chiropractor for relief from Sciatica.

Sciatica Pain Helped by Upper Cervical Chiropractors

Here at Advance Upper Cervical Chiropractic in Walnut Creek, California, we have seen success in helping our pregnant patients deal with sciatic pain. It is important to have a properly aligned spine during pregnancy and delivery. If the spine is out of alignment or twisted, a difficult and painful birth may ensue. It is important to seek out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor during pregnancy. However, one may wonder if it is safe to do so.

We want to assure you that we do not “pop” or “crack” the spine in any way. Rather, we use a very gentle method to help the bones move back into position naturally, thereby causing no risk for mom or baby. In fact, keeping the spine in line may help one to enjoy pregnancy to the fullest extent possible.
